Os elementos introjetados podem permanecer como uma espécie de “corpo estranho” dentro da personalidade e geralmente não são afetados por aprendizagens ou desenvolvimentos posteriores, mas continuam a influenciar comportamentos e percepções. Eles constituem uma parte alienada da personalidade, embutida no ego e vivenciada fenomenologicamente como se fossem próprios da pessoa, mas que na realidade formam uma personalidade emprestada.
Quando os elementos introjetados são consistentes ou sintonizados com pensamentos, sentimentos e comportamentos dos estados de ego Adulto ou Criança, em geral o indivíduo não tem consciência de que há qualquer angústia intrapsíquica. Entretanto, quando tais elementos são destoantes das experiências dos estados de ego Adulto ou Criança eles podem levar a uma desconfortável sensação de conflito interno."
